Bamboo Surf Hut Makes Debut

This year Surfrider Foundation Atlanta Chapter is using non-native bamboo and other recycled material for its festival booth. The Sweetwater 420 Music Festival was the first event this year. Thanks for everyone that came out.

Jekyll Island SUP Trip

Steve and Fred met up with fellow Surfrider member Chuck from Whitecap SUP and others to paddle Jekyll Island on 4/21. The wind had a lot of east so it was a harder paddle than expected. There was also some surf at Goulds Inlet on St. Simons Island for the final session of the day. Future trips to the rest of the Georgia islands are planned. Thanks High Country Outfitters for the YOLO Voyager 14′ and shirts.

Surfrider Crew Sails Jax to Key West

Beau, Brian, Matt, and Steve sailed with owners Barry and Tiane to deliver a 33′ catamaran from Jacksonville to Key West. The crew sailed day and night over 500 hundred miles for 5 days. Steve and Matt did a 95′ dive on the Vandenberg.

Steve Combs was a guest speaker at the DC Surfrider meeting Monday night 3/12/2012. The topic was Surfrider’s research results on the BP Gulf oil spill. He also stand up paddled the Potomac about 10 miles with DC chapter members.

Help Restore the Gulf

This is our last opportunity to ensure that fines collected from the BP oil spill will be used to support ecosystem restoration in the Gulf of Mexico. Please ask your Senators to support the RESTORE Act before it’s too late!

The BP disaster released millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf, causing devastating impacts to the region’s beaches, coastal marshes, barrier islands, and wildlife. Yet, unless Congress takes action, fines issued through the Clean Water Act will be used for unrelated federal spending instead of urgently needed environmental restoration.

Restoring the Gulf will provide major benefits to the natural environment, and will also help protect the region’s economyincluding tourism, recreation, and commercial fishing.

Please make your voice heard and ask your Senators to ensure that penalties from the BP disaster are dedicated to restoring the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem!

Splinters Surf Documentary Tuesday 2/21 Only

Splinters combines great on-wave action with high drama. Restricted by gender, culture and limited jobs, a unique group of athletes contests for a national championship as a ticket off the paradise of Papua New Guinea. A standout on the festival circuit since its Tribeca premiere, Filmmaker Magazine has called Splinters “engrossing and endlessly surprising”.

Morgan Falls Dam SUP Trip UPDATED

Fred and Steve paddled at Morgan Falls Dam on Sunday, 2/12 even though the air temps and the winds were in the 30s. The first race of the SUP Splash Series this year scheduled for May 5 will be hosted at Morgan Falls Overlook Park by chapter sponsor High Country Outfitter. The Atlanta Chapter will be supporting this event. Check the event page for details.

UPDATE: We had another group paddle on 2/19 at Morgan Falls Overlook Park with Steve, Fred, Iris, Bubba, and the rest of the High Country Outfitters crew. I updated the photo gallery. We had an interesting time getting 4 boards loaded on Fred’s VW Thing, including a 14 footer. We paddled about up and back to Azalea Park about 7 miles.

Surf Trip and Volunteer Training in Florida This Weekend

The Florida Regional Director of Surfrider Foundation is hosting a core volunteer training session on Sunday in Destin, Florida. Please email Steve Combs at steve@paddleanywhere.com if you are interested in going. The training is at 10am. We will be staying at a cabin at the beach, and there will be plenty of time to surf and SUP. The surf forecast is looking pretty good (currently 3.5 to 5 feet). All skill levels are welcome, and we have extra gear.Check out our past trips to Destin HERE.

Since this is a training mission, expense reimbursement may be available. Contact us for details. The departure is Friday night, returning Sunday night. The beaches of the Gulf Coast are under attack from seawalls and geo tubes. We are heading down to help out the Emerald Coast Chapter. Please join us if you can.

Members SUP from Lake Lanier Buford Dam to the Olympic Center

Congrats to Steve, Wes, Coty, and Paul for making the 26-mile + paddle across Lake Lanier from Buford Dam to the Olympic Center on Black Friday, November 25, 2011. Wes paddled like he was doing the Jericho’s Mile with a trip time under six hours. Paul was close behind. Steve and Coty finished sub-8 hours in time to enjoy some turkey legs at the finish. Honorable mention to Coty for doing the paddle on a 10’6″. Special thanks to High County Outfitters for supplying a 14″ YOLO and Outside World for supplying a 14′ Laird.
